Introducing Okie to the world. He came to us from a situation where the family could not have pets in their apartment. But that will just work in some other lucky family’s favor because Okie is delightful. He is definitely still a puppy with all of the wonderful puppy behaviors, but he is very smart and a fast learner. When he arrived in his foster home, he immediately made himself at home and started playing with our two Beagles who are 6 and 13 years old. He really bonded with our 6-year-old, and they play…a lot! And sometimes it’s very loud. He has a typical Beagle howl and uses it to his advantage. He is very energetic, and very athletic. I think he’d be a great agility dog. He is food-motivated but has learned to sit and wait patiently for his food bowl to be set down. He’s also learned the “sit” command, and we’re working on “down” and “wait”. He's getting better at house-training. He’ll wait by the back door to be taken out most of the time. And he sometimes dribbles a bit when he gets excited, but nothing major. He sleeps in his crate and is learning to “kennel-up”, but he’d be really happy sleeping on the big comfy bed next to you if you’d like. He also sleeps through the night. He loves going on walks and sniffing everything. And we’ve been working on loose leash walking, but that will take some more training. I’ve also been taking him to AKC Tracking classes and he is a natural and loves the game of Tracking. We are working on distracting him when he gets the puppy “bites” going. And he hasn’t completely learned how to contain his puppy energy yet, but that will come with time. And when he does calm down, he loves to snuggle and stretch out next to you. He is a very handsome Beagle and will make someone a wonderful friend. NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI). Please read our Standards for Adoption and the information about beagles and puppies before you submit an adoption application. Remember that owning a puppy is a full time commitment and you must have the time to commit to a dog that will be with you for 12-17 years. Beagle puppies are cute - but they are very challenging. Puppies may eat your apartment (no refund of security deposit); people who are gone for more than 5 hours at a time will need to make dog walker, neighbor or doggie daycare arrangements. We discourage the adoption of puppies to families with children under the age of six, since puppies will chew toys, shoes, blankets, hands, feet and other important parts of your child's anatomy. |
