Hi, I’m Brody! I came to Midwest BREW from a rural Ohio shelter after I was found as a stray. At an estimated 8 years old, I am a young senior. My foster parents say I am the perfect combination of “playful” and “laidback.” I like to run around the yard, have discovered how much fun toys are, and enjoy playing with the resident beagle at my foster home. After I’m done playing, I am content to just lounge around the house. I’m pretty good about walking on a leash and really enjoy having my head scratched. Like a typical beagle, I like food, but I absolutely love treats and get super excited during treat time. I am gaining confidence, but I am not shy! I’ve also learned how to use a doggy door.

I had an MRI because my hind legs are wobbly. The veterinary neurologist thinks I may have had a disk injury at some point in the past that has now healed, but that has left me with less sensation in my hindquarters. I am not in any pain, though, and get around just fine. My foster parents can give you more details on this. I am 90% housetrained: I do well with a schedule and access to the yard with the doggy door, but I still sometimes have accidents. This is very likely due to my previous injury and may persist for the rest of my life. I weigh 35 lbs and have gotten much stronger since arriving at my foster home. To help prevent a future disc injury, the vet recommends I avoid doing a lot of stairs. I also take a daily low-cost dietary supplement. I would not do well with a cat, and I do not like being crated. My foster parents limit the rooms I have access to when they’re gone. At night, I sleep contentedly in a dog bed. All I’m missing now is my forever home!

NOTE: Dog may be located in any of our six volunteer states (WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, MI).

Nana

Sponsor Nana Today

Nana came to Midwest BREW from a rural county shelter in Ohio. This 10-year-old sweetheart is a very cheerful, social girl who enjoys
going on walks and loves the company of other dogs and of cats.

As we do with all of the beagles in our care, we took Nana to the vet to have her health evaluated. She underwent an ultrasound because of some concerns that the vet had, and the news wasn’t good.

Nana has mammary masses that appear to be cancerous, and some of her lymph nodes are enlarged, most likely due to a severe parasite infestation. Her intestines are inflamed, and she has a hernia due to her small intestines protruding into her perianal area.

Nana was referred to a specialist who will being doing surgery to repair the hernia and remove the mammary chain, and she will also be spayed.

We want to give Nana a chance to live a life of happiness and health for her remaining years, and we are asking for your support to help us offset the costs of Nana’s surgery. We are hoping for the best possible outcome for Nana, and any support for this sweet older girl would be greatly appreciated.

Beagle Facts – Born White

Most Beagle puppies are born nearly all white (with some black). Their darker markings, including the familiar black saddle and tan patches, usually begin to appear within the first few weeks of life and continue developing as they grow.

Beagle Facts – Literature

More forbears of today’s beagle were found in the literature of that time, as well. Famed and somewhat naughty author Geoffrey Chaucer mentioned them in The Canterbury Tales as “smale houndes”, while a line from Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night goes, “She’s a beagle true bred, and one that adores me. What o’ that?”

Beagle Facts – Snail Sniffers

Two Beagles named “Chipper” and “Candie” once discovered two Giant African Snails in the luggage of a passenger in Atlanta. These invasive species of snails produce like wildfire, laying over 1200 eggs a year.

And the worst part is that they eat over 500 types of plants, while being incredibly hard to get rid of. In fact, experts estimate that these Beagles saved the department about 10 years of work and roughly $1 million dollars to eradicate the snail if it were to get in the country.

Beagle Facts – 10 Miles

Some Beagles have shown the ability to smell humans or objects as far as 10 to 12 miles away. And considering the average suburb to be roughly 10 miles wide, that means a Beagle can actually track you down all the way from the other side of a city.

Beagle Facts – Lab Testing

Beagles are known to be submissive when threatened with stress or danger, sadly making them the perfect target for laboratory tests.

Beagle Facts – NASA

In the 1950s, NASA used beagles in their research programs because of the breed’s calm temperament and manageable size. Several beagles were sent to space to test the biological effects of spaceflight before humans made the journey.

There’s a Beagle named “Purin” that holds the Guinness World Record for most balls caught in a dog’s front paws in under a minute. The furry goalie set this new record after catching 14 mini soccer balls while standing on her hind legs.
